My Favorite Mineral- Fluorite!
I am often asked what my favorite stone is. While I have many favorites, fluorite tends to be an all time favorite!
What’s so great about Fluorite?
Where do I start? From purely an appearance standpoint – it’s variety of colors, its luminescence, its structure and it’s optical properties. Fluorite is known for its wide range of colors, including purple, pink, green, blue, yellow, and even colorless. Under certain lighting conditions, fluorite can exhibit fluorescence, which means it can emit visible light when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light. Fluorite has a cubic crystal structure, which means it forms in the shape of a cube. It also occurs in other crystal formations such as octahedral, dodecahedral, and rhombic dodecahedral. The cubic structure is the most common and gives fluorite its distinctive appearance. Fluorite exhibits strong optical properties, such as birefringence and double refraction. These properties cause light to split into two rays as it passes through the crystal, resulting in stunning and unique visual effects. All of these things add up to amazing fluorite specimens!
What about the Metaphysics of Fluorite?
Any time you have a cubic structured crystal, it provides stability, organization and balance. Fluorite helps in organizing thoughts and ideas, making it a useful stone for studying or working on complex tasks. It is also a protective crystal, shielding against negative energies and electromagnetic smog. I love to place fluorite near my computer to help with my mental space as well as absorbing the EMFs that come from WiFi. Fluorite brings order to chaotic thoughts and helps in decision making. Having fluorite around you promotes concentration, improve memory retention, and enhances overall mental abilities.
In terms of chakra healing, fluorite is often associated with the third eye and crown chakras. It stimulates these energy centers, promoting spiritual clarity, insight, and higher states of consciousness. Each color of fluorite has its own unique metaphysical properties. For example, green fluorite is associated with emotional healing and cleansing, purple fluorite is linked to spiritual growth and psychic development, and blue fluorite is believed to enhance communication and self-expression. Rainbow fluorite, also called multi-colored fluorite, displays multiple bands of varying hues of fluorite. It is ideal for overall cleansing and repair of the auric field, and for activating and energizing all chakras. It calms the mind and promotes freethinking, flexibility, and freedom of choice.
Where do the best Fluorites come from?
This may be a matter of preference but some of the most beautiful fluorite specimens in the world came from the fluorite mines in Harden Co., Illinois. Most of these mines closed in the early 1990s. The picture in this blog post is of a stunning and large Harden County specimen. Also in the United States, New Mexico has some very nice specimens. Outside of the US, some of the most colorful and amazing specimens come from China.
As you can see, there is a lot to love about fluorite and there is so much more to it than what I have mentioned here. If you haven’t worked with it yet, I highly recommend it!
