Are Selenite and Satin Spar the Same?

There is a bit of discussion in the scientific and metaphysical realms about what everyone calls selenite. Most of the “selenite” on the open market is actually satin spar from Morocco. It is used widely as a clearing and charging tool. But is it selenite?

Selenite and satin spar are both forms of the evaporative material called gypsum. They both form when dissolved ions crystalize from evaporating bodies of water. When that immobile water evaporates without replenishment it results in high concentrations of ions that eventually crystalize into minerals either through precipitation or from all of the water evaporating leaving behind a thin layer of gypsum salt.

Differentiating Satin Spar from Selenite is easy once you know what to look for. Selenite has a transparent appearance, sometimes with a white dull luster. Satin spar has a white fibrous appearance and a shine known as chatoyance – (think satin) sometimes referred to as the cat’s-eye affect. Both minerals are very soft with a Mohs hardness of 2, meaning that they will scratch quite easily.

Well- since they are both of the same mineral family, which one should you use? I always defer to you to utilize your own intuition. If you are attracted to satin spar- then it’s for you. If you get a better feel from true selenite, then that is the one you should use. If you are only using it because everybody else is and you read about it in a book- then check in with your inner guidance to make sure you actually need it. Also- I look at the internal crystal structure (aka lattice) for the information I need from a crystal. Satin spar is fibrous and can therefore capture things. True selenite is reflective and therefore sends energy back out with light.

A note about the use of selenite/satin spar: In Chinese medicine, selenite is used for acute conditions and is supposed to be used in the short term. It is a fluid regulator and generator for the body. I only mention this here to advise if you are utilizing selenite/satin spar often you may want to research its use further.

Selenite is a popular crystal when it comes to cleansing and clearing the home or office space. It dispels negative energy and enhances clarity, focus and creates calm in any space. It clears negative energy, cleanses and charges other crystals, is self-cleansing, its’ calming properties make it ideal for meditation and spiritual work and it is a perfect crystal for gridding the home or property.

To care for your selenite and satin spar, never use water to cleanse it as it will dissolve over time. Smudging, sunlight and moonlight are effective ways to clear and charge it. If you would like to know more about selenite or other gems, feel free to reach out! I am happy to help.
