Obsidian – Reflection Protection & Illumination

What is Obsidian?

Obsidian is a midnight black stone that is volcanic in origin and a natural glass that forms when silica lava cools too quickly for crystallization to occur. It is named after the one who discovered it- the Roman explorer Obsius who may have first encountered it in Ethiopia. Prehistoric cultures used obsidian for making blades and points for projectiles and other cultures used it as a magic mirror to see into other realms. Obsidian’s fiery origin makes it an excellent tool to use to help become reborn, clearing away obstacles blocking us while giving insight and clarity at the same time!

Obsidian is a stone that could be easily overlooked as basic since it is readily available on the open market. One thing I love about it is that it’s a super-cooled liquid that as a glass lacks the characteristics to be a true mineral. The rapid cooling prevents its compounds from ordering into a crystalline structure. For me, this incompleteness is the beauty of it, it is part of the way into the mineral kingdom and also all about the void of becoming.

What is obsidian good for?

Obsidian is all about grounding, protective and illuminating. It acts as a shield against negative energies and helps dispel feelings of fear, anxiety, and stress. By establishing a strong connection with the Earth’s energy, obsidian aids in creating a sense of stability and security. This volcanic glass has a remarkable ability to facilitate emotional healing and release. It encourages self-reflection and introspection, allowing you to confront deep-rooted emotions, traumas, and patterns. Through this process, obsidian supports emotional growth, fostering a sense of empowerment and inner strength. Obsidian possesses purifying properties that help cleanse and clear stagnant energy. Whether it’s within you or the surrounding environment, obsidian aids in removing negativity and promoting a sense of renewal. With its reflective qualities, obsidian assists in gaining clarity and insight. It encourages you to face your truths, make informed decisions, and navigate through challenging situations. By enhancing intuition and promoting self-awareness, obsidian becomes a valuable tool for personal growth and transformation. One way I like to use obsidian is for cutting etheric cords and ties to unwanted energies.

What are some obsidian varieties?

There are many varieties of obsidian. The ones I will delve into here are mahogany, snowflake and sheen obsidian.

Mahogany Obsidian

The rich brown color in mahogany obsidian comes from hematite or magnetite inclusions within the glass. These inclusions give mahogany obsidian its unique appearance, resembling the deep reddish-brown color of mahogany wood. Mahogany obsidian helps ground energy, bringing stability and balance to your life. It can help you feel more connected to the Earth and rooted in the present moment. I have found that this stone has protective properties, shielding you from negative energy and psychic attacks. It can create a barrier of protection around you, helping to keep your energy field clear and balanced. Use mahogany obsidian to assist in healing emotional wounds and traumas. It can help release negative emotions such as anger, fear, and resentment, allowing for emotional healing and growth. It can give you the confidence and determination to overcome obstacles and face difficult situations with resilience. Mahogany obsidian is also great for manifestation and abundance.

Snowflake Obsidian

Snowflake obsidian is formed when some grayish spheres form as cristobalite which is a high temperature poly-morph of quartz. The rocks cool too quickly and the cristobalite infiltrates gas bubble spaces within. As the vapor freezes obsidian into crystals, it forms small snowflake like patterns. I think it is worth noting that the formation of snowflake obsidian requires specific conditions during the volcanic eruption, such as the presence of water vapor or other gases that promote the crystallization of the cristobalite. I adore Snowflake Obsidian because it aids in promoting clarity and focus, helping to bring about positive transformation. Use snowflake obsidian to help ignite a new direction or use it to add momentum to what is already in motion. It is very balancing with the light and dark structure. Use this obsidian when you need illumination of new ideas.

Sheen Obsidian

Sheen Obsidians are formed when small quantities of gas and/or nano-particles of mineral impurities are included in the obsidian as it cools and solidifies. These impurities can create iridescent effects, giving the stone its sheen and metallic appearance. The specific composition and conditions during formation determine the colors and patterns seen in silver and gold sheen obsidian. Sheen obsidians can appear dull and dark from one angle, then glimmer with metallic light from another. The dual nature reflects upon the dual nature of life – life and death, light and dark, fear and love. Gold sheen tends to be more masculine, warm and energizing while silver sheen is more feminine, cooling and introspective. They help in grounding and stabilizing energies, promoting self-reflection and introspection. Sheens enhance psychic abilities and provide protection against negative energies.

Conclusion: Obsidian is a not so basic and powerful stone that offers a wide range of healing properties. From grounding and protection to emotional healing and insight, its energy can support your journey towards physical, emotional, and spiritual wellness. Whether it’s through meditation, personal rituals, or wearing obsidian jewelry, incorporating this amazing stone into your life can bring about profound positive changes. Most obsidian carried in my shop is self-mined material that I was drawn to go find. I will always have a great fondness for the obsidian that I self-mined as it called me from afar. It is readily available at my markets.
